John Sewell has been involved in many initiatives in recent years. Here are links to several of them:
Since 1999, John has administered a web site about local government in Canada, and he writes its free monthly electronic Bulletin. See www.localgovernment.ca
John is a member of the Toronto Police Accountability Coalition, which deals with questions of policing policy in Toronto. He writes the group’s free monthly electronic Bulletin. See www.tpac.ca
John was a member of the Save Union Station Committee, which tried (unsuccessfully) to get city council to focus on real improvements for the traveling public using Union Station. The 99 year lease the city wanted to sign with the Union Pearson Group was finally (and fortunately) rejected by Union Pearson earlier this year, so the issue remains unresolved and perhaps the Committee’s ideas can be adopted by Council. The web site has been dormant for almost a year, but it gives a good idea of what the possibilities are: www.saveunionstation.ca.
John was a member of Friends of Maple Leaf Gardens, a group which tried to convince city council to keep the Gardens as an ice hockey rink rather than allow Loblaws to make it into a giant supermarket. City Council had no interest in our group, and sided with Loblaws. But that was two years ago, and still the supermarket isn’t there. Maybe we can get the Gardens back? www.friendsofmapleleafgardens.ca
John helped form Direct City Action in 2005 to focus on city issues. He wrote the Bulletin for the group until the end of 2005, when the group became much less active: www.directcityaction.ca
